The train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes approximately 12 hours but is a safe and convenient way to travel to Chiang Mai. Travelers arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport on International flights and intending to travel immediately to Chiang Mai should note that whilst there is a high speed rail link into Bangkok city centre, it does not directly connect with Bangkok’s Hualamphong station, the departure station for trains to Chiang Mai. Bangkok Station

Purchasing tickets for the train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai is easy to do at Bangkok’s Hualamphong station. Unfortunately, the State Railway of Thailand who operate Thailand’s rail system, currently have no online booking service, however, with the exception of the major Thai Holidays, train tickets to Chiang Mai will usually still be available a day or two before you intend to travel and may also be available for same day travel. Alternatively, you can purchase your tickets online up to 60 days in advance at one of the Thai Travel Agencies listed below. For a fee they will arrange to have the tickets waiting for you at your hotel or Hualamphong Station. For an additional fee the tickets may be couriered to your home Country.
