The 28th Bosang Umbrella Festival will be held in Bosang, Chiang Mai on January 21st to January 23rd. Whilst the full title of this festival is the Bosang Umbrella and Sankamphaeng Handicraft Festival it is umbrellas that dominate the festival. The Bosang Umbrella Festival is one of the most colourful of all the Chiang Mai Festivals with a street carnival atmosphere.
The village of Bosang in the Sankamphaeng district of Chiang Mai has been making umbrellas for many years and is known as the Umbrella Centre of Thailand. Originally the umbrellas were made as offerings for Monks but as they became more popular the villagers realized that they could have a good source of income so that now almost the entire village, as a walk down the main street of Bosang village will show, is involved in umbrella making or selling.

The umbrellas made in Bosang can be both practical, as defense against sun or rain, and also decorative with their brightly painted designs.
During the Bosang Umbrella Festival, the streets of Bosang are decorated with, as you have probably guessed already, umbrellas. There are competitions held for the best decorated shops and a procession of beautiful Thai ladies dressed in Lanna costume riding bicycles and holding umbrellas. With Cultural performances, Handicraft products on sale, a musical performance and competitions for umbrella and fan painting, there is always something happening to enjoy. The colourful and exciting Bosang Umbrella Festival runs for 3 days and is brought to a close on the 3rd day with the glamorous Miss Bosang Umbrella Beauty Contest.
